Heard it this afternoon from a large booster. According to him all "anti-Lew" large donors all received a phone call this AM.

Interesting indeed. What do it mean? :popcorn
So what does this do for the current staff?

It really doesn't do anything other than put them on edge. Hopefully the new guy realizes that jobs are hard to come by and keeps them around.
I was talking about the football staff.

Their pretty much in the same position. I would think they might be a little nervous though if the new guy comes in and doesn't appreciate losses to FCS teams.

I don't know, I seem to remember a few years back when an AD left that a certain bball coach really liked. It started a downward spiral of that coaches tenure in Lawrence. I think Bill Self is a big Lew fan, I don't know that for sure, but, I think Self has gotten anything he wanted from Perkins (that's not a bad thing). I know this thread is in reference to what the football programs response to the AD "retiring" but it will go much deeper than that IMO.

One big difference Lime, our current coach doesn't think he is bigger and better than the University itself.
Coach Self knows that he has an awesome job regardless of who his "boss" is.

Is that a typical severance package for someone like this? You get to move up your retirement a whole year, but still get paid for it (and then some)?

Agree, but, we all know what it is like to work for someone you can't stand. If it became unbearable for Coach Self, we all know that there are many places around the country that would be more than happy to help him get out of an unpleasant work environment.
I guess I am just hoping that the administration thinks big in the next hire for AD. Conference realignment isn't going to go away. We need someone with connections and the ability to sell the University on it's merits as a whole and not why we have a football program with no real consistent winning tradition.
We need a crushed dove icon. I guess this will work for now. :killme

Bill Self has known Lew is "retiring" for a long time. Yes, Self and Perkins have a good relationship, but its not like they are tied together at all.
We have nothing to worry about with Bill....The other coach might have just gotten the hottest seat after one game in NCAA history.

I hope and think that you are right WtW. I just think you are dealing with a different dynamic when you have a proven successful head coach and the university hires some "wet behind the ears, something to prove" AD to put his stamp on a program. It might get interesting. :popcorn

I've lost track of where your total hatred of Lew stemmed from. Did you lose your primo seats in AFH when the point system came into play or something?
WavetheWheat

The man has done nothing but build a nice buildings and fix up AFH. Otherwise complete and utter failure. He rode coattails of two coaches he didn't hire and built those facilities with their work.
He served over the most corrupt Athletics department in our schools history. He has 5 workers under federal indictment, he is currently under investigation, his department stole millions from our school, he fired the best football coach of my generation on wrongful and dishonest accusations and he did all of this with and arrogance and smug attitude that turns anybody off that meets him.
He bent my university over and fucked it repeatedly up the ass for years and our fan base took it because we were winning in football and winning in basketball.
His 4 million dollar paycheck two years ago and his 2 million dollar buyout today are yet again another screw job.
The aidz board loved Lew. Most people I knew hated the man, and it wasn't the points system. It was the handling of a lot of university affairs. He wasn't some magic guy like everyone made him to be. The Bonnie thing really set off some of the alumni I know. Toss the Mangino fiasco in, the hiring of an unproven at our revenue generating sport, and the ticket scandal on top of that and many people are celebrating.

The guy has a shady as all hell past. Anyone remember how his tenure at Maryland ended?
As for Self, I think any AD they bring in would understand that letting him leave this university would only result in a massive PR disaster. I don't even think BGL would be dumb enough to let him leave. Imagine Texas hiring a new AD who immediately fired Mack Brown.

KU Forced Out Perkins To Prevent Successor Input
Posted by Brooks on Sep. 07, 2010, 3:08pm
Tuesday Thayer Evans of FOXSports.com reported that University of Kansas Athletic Director Lew Perkins resigned from his post effective immediately. The school later confirmed Evans’ report, framing Perkins’ ouster as a “retirement.”
Lew Perkins
In the past year, Kansas school officials have uncovered astounding corruption in Perkins’ KU athletic department regarding the misuse of game tickets. (The FBI is still investigating.) Perkins was not implicated by the school itself in that scandal, which reportedly cost the school up to $3 million in lost ticket revenue, but Perkins was still facing an ethics investigation into his own handling of state funds.
The Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission is scheduled to meet on Sept. 21 to explore conflict-of-interest issues pertaining to state employees. The commission was expected to soon examine the issue of Perkins accepting a “personal loan” of $15,000 in exercise equipment from a Kansas Athletics vendor - who has confirmed the transaction - in exchange for better seats to Kansas basketball games.
Kansas law states that “no person subject to the provisions of this section shall solicit or accept any gift, economic opportunity, loan, gratuity, special discount or service provided because of such person’s official position.”
Violation of the law is grounds for dismissal and a $5,000 fine.
With the commission’s next meeting just two weeks away, perhaps today’s “retirement” announcement was related to the prospect of more Perkins-related bad publicity for the school.
While a source didn’t confirm that connection, I was given some additional insight into the impetus of the effective dismissal of Perkins.
I was told today by a former Univ. of Kansas athletic dept. staffer that much of the departure of Perkins had to do with the school’s unwillingness to allow him to assist in the hiring of the school’s next athletic director.
I’m told Perkins was already promoting one of his KU athletic dept. cronies for his former post, but that university officials were extremely uncomfortable in having the scandal-addled Perkins associated with the future hire.
Thus, Perkins was pushed out to prevent any input whatsoever on the future of the Kansas athletic department.

If that's true, I would expect that Mr. Lester's position will be very temporary.
Glad to see that we are looking out of house for the replacement.

So who do you hire for AD? We just demonstrated how helpless we are in this realignment crap. Who is going to want to take on a BCS program that may be in a second tier league in 3-5 years? Certainly not anyone from another BCS program and not anyone that's a legit up and comer.

Someone who wants to gain the rep of "saving KU basketball" by getting them into a big conference perhaps?

THIS. We have some great people working in the AD here, especially in the academic department.
Personally, I'd like to see them hire a former KU athlete that everyone loves. I'd love for Riggo to take the job, but I know he never would. Plus he's not that much younger than Perkins.
